I remember the night before I left on the Colorado Trail, that’s what I was thinking back to.  I was so nervous.  I was kinda freaking out, just having to breathe and center myself of “what have I done?”  But I thought back and remembered, I’ve done weekends by myself before and I know that I can do this because I’ve already kinda done it before.

THRU HIKING WISDOMS

THRU HIKING

• So I set myself up for success… by doing many backpacking trips alone into Colorado wilderness that I was somewhat familiar with.

• I remember the night before I left on the Colorado Trail, that’s what I was thinking back to.  I was so nervous.  I was kinda freaking out, just having to breathe and center myself of “what have I done?”  But I thought back and remembered, I’ve done weekends by myself before and I know that I can do this because I’ve already kinda done it before.

• Even though I’m afraid, I know that I know how to do this and I have the skills required.

• I think that’s also a very important part of the experience is just getting rocked a little bit.

• I’m just day hiking, but I’m staying.

• I just kinda tried to listen to whatever sounded fun and whatever I wanted.  And that was really the joy of it.

• It definitely was empowering in the sense that anytime that there’s fear and you overcome that fear and learn new skills throughout that process, I think we are just better more well-rounded humans coming out of those experiences.

• What you realize quickly on the trail is you’re too tired to be scared most of the time.

• I met people who were willing to just sit in those hard truths with me.

• This is my story now.  And this is what I’m going to do and I want this to be a part of me.
